The Premier League will pay solemn tribute to the late Liverpool forward Diogo Jota and his younger brother, Andre Silva, with a coordinated observance across all top-flight fixtures this weekend.

Both men tragically perished in a car accident in northern Spain on 3 July, sending shockwaves through the footballing fraternity.

Following consultations with Liverpool, the league has decreed that a minute’s silence will precede every match in the opening round of fixtures.

Players of all clubs will don black armbands, while commemorative imagery and messages will be projected onto stadium big screens, ensuring a visible and poignant remembrance.

This weekend’s tributes will follow the moving homage rendered prior to last Sunday’s Community Shield clash between Liverpool and Crystal Palace at Wembley.

The Liverpool contingent also unfurled a white banner emblazoned with Jota’s image, name, and the number 20 — now permanently retired by the club in his honour — accompanied by a stirring rendition of You’ll Never Walk Alone.

The occasion, however, was marred briefly when a small number of Palace supporters inadvertently disrupted the minute’s silence.

Liverpool head coach Arne Slot later opined that the interruption was likely the result of ignorance rather than malice, noting that nearby Palace fans quickly attempted to quell the disturbance, albeit noisily, prompting further reaction from Liverpool’s supporters.

Despite the momentary lapse, the prevailing sentiment at Wembley was one of respect and unity, with supporters on both sides recognising the enormity of the loss.

Liverpool and Wolverhampton Wanderers — Jota’s former clubs — will each conduct additional commemorations during their respective Premier League openers against Bournemouth and Manchester City.
